Memory Quilts

Man's memory quiltMemory Quilts are made from various apparel items as shown in the photos here. They can include fabric from many garments as well as any special insignias, embroidered names and emblems from uniforms or jackets. We can incorporate pockets, cuffs, lapels, buttons, neckties and even photos.

Grief counselors know that a ‘linking object’ to someone we have loved and lost can be very comforting and what could be more comforting than a quilt? Customers have told us that their Remember Quilt is especially effective in helping children deal with loss. “Remember when you and Grandma made Christmas cookies and she wore this?” Or “Remember Grandpa wearing this when we went camping?” Encourage children to draw a picture or write a letter to their loved one that could also be incorporated into the quilt. For transferring onto fabric, find companies online, send photo images to them electronically and they will print onto fabric. If you search online photo transfers you will have many options to choose from. Another option is to check with your local photocopy shop to see if they provide this service.

Woman's memory quiltWe will fuse an interfacing onto any lightweight fabrics such as those often used for dresses or blouses. Send a variety of garments such as uniforms, sporting attire, work clothes, outerwear, sleepwear, wedding attire or any special occasion clothing. When selecting the clothing to send, think of your loved one’s most important accomplishments, his or her favorite hobbies, interests and causes or beliefs that he or she was passionate about. If your loved one were planning this quilt, what would he or she include?

You may send as many garments as you like but keep in mind that if you send garments that are not washable your quilt will be dry-clean only. Please send only clean clothes.

We have lost loved ones, too, and we know how important this person and this quilt is to you. Please know that we will handle his/her apparel with the utmost respect and care.

Hanging sleeveHanging sleeves can be added to your custom quilts so they can be displayed on a wall. We will need 9” of fabric (usually matching the backing) that is as long as the quilt width. The ends are roll hemmed and the piece is folded in half lengthwise. It is attached to the quilt as the binding is stitched on and the lower folded edge is hand-stitched in place. You will need a curtain rod or some sort of pole to hang the quilt. Remember Quilts does not carry this hardware. Refer to the order form for hanging sleeve charges.
